Article Analysis

Tilly Scott ⋅ 8th February 2024

An analysis of an online article written by Djanlissa Pringles published on the VICE website (originally on VICE Netherlands) on the 8th of February, 2024.

The article starts off by explaining to the reader the back story of how Chinese children came to be adopted by international parents, but at the same time sets a more sombre tone with the context of China having a one-child policy, child trafficking and abandonment.

The article then goes on to dig into how this event progressed on into what it is today and the actual opinions of those children that were a product of this ordeal, and are :

“Reckoning with the impact of being raised in a social and cultural context so far removed from their birth country.”

Starting the article off with strong context to educate the reader, immediately informs them that this is nonfiction and the author’s technique of putting the concluded result of the topic in the title yet not addressing it until later and carefully explaining the series of events while leading it up to today makes the audience more inclined to read more while also being educated about what had caused these children to have foreign parents and be grown apart from their birth country.

Then lastly, it goes into how these abandoned children are now living their lives, how this has impacted them and what it is like to be estranged from their own culture, also links a further piece about a documentary made with Xiangxia but doesn’t explain in detail, to leave people wondering.

Elephant & Castle’s ever changing environment

Tilly Scott ⋅ 4th December 2023

Over the years, London has seen itself change massively in terms of its aesthetic, and has been mocked for supposedly wanting to be like New York City with its high rise buildings and penthouses.

Elephant & Castle’s residential area, just a five minute walk from its infamously gentrified roundabout

Pictured here is St Georges road, located a five minute walk from E&C’s popular roundabout and main road. However, it seems that this area is heavily surrounded by communities and the homes of the people that were here maybe before the South London area decided to make a drastic change for good.

It’s not as if these industrial changes and new wave of residents are massively far apart from the communal and residential areas are far apart from each other. In fact they are a couple minutes apart, and if you do go a few bus stop rides down the road from the bustling roundabout, you will find yourself the true representation of what E&C actually is.

An estate placed in front of a new high rise.

Community, togetherness and old heritage is what is slipping away right in front of our eyes. Pictured here is a tower block, cemented right in the heart of Elephant and Castle, which has been here for what seems many years, However right behind these flats is a new building with a fresh and more modern design, a design we are starting to notice and become familiar with all around London. Out with the old style, in with the new.

Old fashioned flat pictured next to a new one.

Pictured here is the old school homes that had been built when the area was more authentic, and not on the other hand trying to impersonate cities across the pond. This picture represents how the new modern style London is trying to adopt is flushing out the communal sense of Elephant and Castle, and the community members themselves, are feeling this the most. So what do they think?

Shops & road located just before the roundabout.

I had asked around to get a general feeling about how local people feel about the changes in Elephant and Castle. One said that they don’t visit often, and somebody that lives in the hidden parts of E&C made the presumption that they want to drive out the older residents of the area to make London look the same and more modernised.

Pictured here, is the local shops that we may be more familiar with as Londoners, and this road goes into a high road with less skyscrapers and tall buildings.

What was the selection process?

Battersea’s playlist you can find on Spotify.

The experts at Battersea carefully selected the sounds and music when creating this playlist. Taking into consideration music that animals already enjoy. Starting off with music played at animal charity kennels, and tranquilising sounds that also owners can enjoy too. Battersea also puts out more advice during this time of year to keep your animals as calm as possible, such as altering their daily schedules, by changing the time they eat dinner, and also taking them out for walks earlier before fireworks and big celebrations start. Jane Pemberthy also advises to close curtains and distract pets from outside celebrations “Listening to our carefully curated playlist alongside following Battersea’s other useful advice like setting up a cosy ‘safe space’ for your pet as a quiet retreat and closing the curtains to muffle the sight and sound of fireworks will help to keep them happy and stress-free.”

How the media is contributing to your opinion of Nella Rose.

Tilly Scott ⋅ 30th November 2023

It’s been on most peoples lips all week. The internet personality’s entrance to ITV’s new season of ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ has been nothing but controversial, lets dive in.

@nellarosee on Instagram

The Youtube star has found herself in controversy ever since she joined ITV’s new season of I’m a Celeb…people are torn about who’s right and who’s wrong, looking deeper into the issue here, it may seem that this villain edit Nella has received may be purposeful and fully intentional, receiving a load of of com complaints each episode, and being slammed online, lets ask the question of, is this all warranted by Nella’s behaviour?

For some, the answer is yes, and for some it’s no. Those who know Nella externally and from her Youtube era have this image of her that is bubbly, outgoing and funny, furthermore hearing reports about her on the new season of IM a Celeb had her fans ecstatic and happy for her first breakthrough on British television.

What changed?

Fred Sirieix and Nella Rose on I’m a Celebrity (ITV)

Once episode three aired, viewers were confused and in shock at the exchange in conversation that Nella and First dates host. They had clashed due to a comment that Sirieix had made the night before about being Nella’s dad. Fred who is 52 had claimed that he is of an old age now, but Nella disagreed saying he is still youthful, Fred’s next comment is where it had all went wrong.

https://x.com/imacelebrity/status/1727076022166937938?s=20: How the media is contributing to your opinion of Nella Rose.

“You know I could be your dad” was repeated a couple times by Fred, and caused Nella to avoid him the following morning and also said comments such as, “I accept your apology but let’s not be friends, how about that?” and “Don’t bring up my dead parents, are you stupid?” But what was so wrong about his comment? was the question on everybody’s minds at the time.

Nella and her late father, Kamango Paul Hollela

The Youtuber had lost her father just four years after the death of her mother, Eseho Omolongo, who had died in Nella’s arms back in 2016. Nella had told her followers on TikTok that she still remains resilient despite her loss.

However, viewers are conflicted as due to Fred’s language barrier, he allegedly meant that he was “old enough to be her father” however it was said as “I could be your dad”.

Since then, Nella has been in the headlines countless times for her other conversations with Nigel Farage on immigration in the UK, Sam Thompson in the bushtucker trial and her “having it easy” in the challenge, whether she was right of wrong in her rows, and so on.

So do you think the media is portraying her fairly?

From the very start of the season, viewers and even some celebrities are in rows with others on whether Nella is right or wrong, whether she is a celebrity, whether she should be on the show, however the amount of online hate that this ordeal has sparked, some would argue has gone overboard.

What would you make of the media’s portrayal of her? Ask the question of, if the amount of online hate she’s receiving is deserved, if you was Nella what would you do differently? Do you think Nigel/Fred are wrong in this situation?

Where else have we seen examples of this?

In 2020, shortly after the passing of George Floyd in the USA, which had a massive influence on the Black Lives Matter movement, Britains Got Talent star, and Diversity dance leader, Ashley Banjo, had done a performance on the show, to show where he stands on racism.

Britain’s Got Talent, 2020 ITV

It hadn’t gone as well as planned, because while they did receive a lot of support for this performance it also created outrage among BGT viewers, raking up a massive 24,000+ complaints to Ofcom.

Reports by Ofcom claim that some viewers thought it was racist to white people, unsuitable for TV, and inappropriate for children to watch.

TV star and comedian, London Hughes also expressed her opinion about how black people are portrayed in the media, as this continues to become an ongoing topic people are conflicted about.
